The exhibition

The exhibition Serious Moonlight, conceived by curator Stephanie Seidel of the Institute for Contemporary Art in Miami, in collaboration with the Frac Lorraine and the Kunstmuseum Luzern, offers the public a rare opportunity to discover the Californian artist Betye Saar. It also provides an opportunity to enter her world through what is probably the least known part of her work, namely her installations.
While she is considered a pioneer of assemblage art in the United States, in the spirit of a Joseph Cornell, and her prints and altar-like sculptures/objects imbued with a syncretic spirituality have been included in important American museums in recent years, the installations that Betye Saar conceived from the 1980s onwards remain almost unknown. Perhaps because the artist establishes few protocols, and her works are mostly in progress, never completely fixed - which does not please the curators. Probably also because for a long time the hybrid and non-consensual nature of her work, its political and critical content, and its sense of reappropriation have shaken, without violence, the WASP canons...
