Monaco-Alexandrie, le grand détour.

Monaco-Alexandrie, le grand détour. : Léonor Fini Portrait de André Pieyre de Mandiargues, c. 1930 81 x 65 cm Collection privée © Adagp, Paris, 2021

The exhibition

The Monaco-Alexandria exhibition distances itself from the conformism of a masculine, nationalistic and European-centric history of art. This is true even if Western notoriety is present, from Brassaï to Duchamp, from Chirico to Van Dongen or from Leonor Fini to Raoul Dufy. It is a pleasure to rediscover forgotten personalities such as Joyce Mansour (1928-86), a French-speaking Egyptian poet and Breton's muse, or the astonishing Georges Henein (1914-73), an Egyptian diplomat and surrealist poet, a major figure in artistic relations between France and Egypt. In the 1930s, it was he who ensured the important diffusion of surrealism in Cairo. Monaco and Alexandria have in common the fact that they have welcomed many artists, dancers, musicians and writers of great importance and shared great avant-garde and transnational cultural themes.
