Fernand Léger

1881 (Argentan ) / 1955 (Gif-sur-Yvette)

As Léger always endeavoured to define his aesthetic orientations, we can follow his evolution through his extensive correspondence, the many conferences linked to his exhibitions in Europe and the United States, and the teaching provided in his own academy, founded in Montparnasse in 1924, where he trained generations of artists. Fascinated by the creative revolutions of the 20th century in its early stages, Fernand Léger entered fully into the "new spirit" with Le Corbusier, and embraced the inventions of his time, cinema, speed, the rise of the city, machinery, lighting, fashion, advertising, posters and the large mural paintings that he loved.
