Marc Chagall
1887 (Liozna, Biélorussie) / 1985 (Saint-Paul de Vence)
Marc Chagall was nobody's contemporary: he did not bow to any of the idols of the avant-garde, nor did he become a member of any movement. Having always preferred the company of men of letters to that of the painters of his time, he belongs to that small number of unclassifiable artists whose work crosses through art history like a kind of meteor. André Breton described his painting as follows: "His great lyrical breakthrough occurred around 1911. At that moment, the metaphor made its triumphant entry into modern painting."
