Eugène Delacroix
1798 (Charenton-Saint-Maurice) / 1863 (Champrosay)
A major painter of the Romantic movement, Eugène Delacroix left us manifesto works that have become icons: Liberty Guiding the People, The Death of Sardanapalus and Dante's Boat are all essential monuments of painting. Despite the harshness of the critics who greeted his first paintings, he also found unfailing supporters, such as Baudelaire, who, with the skill that we know, knew how to "see" his art. His drawing, if it has an important part in his career, and for virtuoso that it is, would not know how to make forget the attraction of its colors, which he uses with brilliance, which places it in the full line rubéniste. He was also one of the most talented painters of orientalism: his superb half-naked posing with lasciviousness in smoky harems are as many lessons of eroticism and exoticism.
