Jumièges Abbey is one of the oldest and most important Benedictine monasteries in Normandy. Although to date we have been unable to identify any remains dating back to its foundation in the 7th century, recent excavations on the church of Saint Pierre have made it possible to date its construction to the end of the 8th century, making this edifice a unique example of a Carolingian Christian church. This archaeological interest in no way detracts from the emotion aroused by a visit to the abbey church of Notre-Dame, a jewel of Norman Romanesque architecture.
In order to preserve the monument's authenticity, the reconstruction of Jumièges was not envisaged. However, work to consolidate and protect the masonry is regularly scheduled in order to preserve its structures and decoration as far as possible, and to ensure its safety.
