Auguste Herbin, le maître révélé

Auguste Herbin, le maître révélé : Auguste Herbin. Les Joueurs de boules n° 2.1923, huile sur toile, 146 x 114 cm. Centre Pompidou – Musée national d’Art moderne, Paris.

The exhibition

During the war, in solitude, Herbin developed his famous "plastic alphabet", the foundation of his future production, the principles of which he codified in his book L'Art non figuratif, non objectif (1949, published by Lydia Conti). His painting, with its vivid, uncluttered geometry and sharp contours, defines an aesthetic of the cut plane and the hard edge before its time (Lune, 1945).
