The exhibition

Ostend, Antwerp and Brussels are joining forces for an exciting James Ensor (1860-1949) year throughout 2024. Born in Ostend where he spent his entire life, the seaside town's Mu-ZEE holds some 370 of his paintings and manages numerous archives – letters, photos and publications – which provide fascinating insight into the life of an artist who was originally a musician, then a painter, draftsman and engraver. Little Belgium at the turn of the 19th century was a key player in the aesthetic revolutions of modernity, both in terms of expressionism with Ensor, Permeke and Spilliaert, a fabulous trio, and in symbolism with Khnopff, Degouve de Nuncques, or Jean Delville.
