The exhibition

Mark Rothko, in presence

"Art is about communicating something about the world", said Mark Rothko. Dare we add: "about us, about all of us". For, while we know Rothko as an abstract artist, let's not forget that, above all, he saw his painting as a gateway to ourselves. The Fondation Louis Vuitton devotes its first room to the early Rothko, whose weightless, sometimes expressionistic figures give way to compositions in which plant and animal forms are interwoven. The strength of this chronological tour lies in the fact that it covers his entire career, with loans mainly from American institutions, but also from the Tate in London, private collections and the Rothko family - Christopher, the artist's son, known for his critical approach to his father's work, is co-curator of the exhibition. In contrast to the reductive interpretations of his life, from the memory of Russian repression of the Jewish population to his suicide, this exhibition judiciously confines itself to questions of painting.
