Gastineau Massamba. Makuku mâ tàtû

Gastineau Massamba. Makuku mâ tàtû : Tomo Youla III, série Lari, 2023, huile et acrylique sur papier, 100 x 70 cm.

The exhibition

GASTINEAU MASSAMBA
Born in 1973 in Mavoulah, Congo Brazaville
Lives and works in Paris

"I really like this image of Albert Einstein sticking out his tongue: in painting, mouths are usually closed, tongues and teeth rarely visible. In my work, it's the opposite: we see a lot of the scream, the mouth, the tongue and the teeth. Saliva too. Painting saliva interests me, even if it sometimes disturbs those who look at my paintings. After that, a work of art has to speak for itself, which is why I try to say as little as possible about it."
Gastineau Massamba

Entitled Makuku mâ tàtû (in reference to the three stones that supported the mythical cooking pot of the Kongo Kingdom), the exhibition brings together a selection of works produced between 2020 and 2023, invariably linked by the black of their support. Gastineau Massamba presents charcoal and pastel drawings on paper and large-format works on canvas, as well as, for the first time, oil and acrylic paintings on paper.

Excerpt from an article by Tom Laurent to be published in Art magazine N°108 Absolument.

The artist is represented by Galerie Anne de Villepoix.
