The exhibition

Après le coup de tonnerre The exhibition of 27 works by Bergman at the Musée d'Art Moderne in Paris in 1977 should have made her part of contemporary art history. This was not the case. After the thunderous exhibition at Kerguéhennec in 2017, could the MAM retrospective put an end to a long-delayed consecration process and reveal the hidden face of this sparkling iceberg?

The times have changed considerably. What is certain is that Bergman responds to the new horizon of expectations that is now emerging. In the cultural context of the 1970s and 80s, dominated by youthfulness, hedonism and the demand for permanent transgression, magnetised by freedom, his painting could meet with some esteem, but it was relatively limited. There are now completely different concerns and consideration for nature, the quest for meaning and spirituality, runs through all societies. Bergman takes advantage of this and it's fair. I would add that, in his case, it is fundamental to see his paintings in situ to appreciate them, because reproductions of works in metal foil are often detestable. The opportunities given at the retrospective at the Museum of Modern Art in Paris or at the Hartung-Bergman Foundation are therefore to be seized urgently!
