Thomas Demand. Le bégaiement de l'Histoire.

Thomas Demand. Le bégaiement de l'Histoire. : Atelier, 2014

The exhibition

One could say that since his beginnings, Thomas Demand has been trying, literally, to make what he has seen stand up in image(s). Images of current events, political images, symbolic images, reproduced images, mute images, which populate his mind for a very precise reason. For this he has conceived a protocol, working methods so rigorous that they recall those of an architect. One enters his visual universe through the prism of sculpture, of haptics, at least as much as through that of photography: over time, these two dimensions have become indissociable, they are constantly echoing each other. Born in 1964 in Munich, Thomas Demand studied at the Kunstakademie in Dusseldorf with the sculptor Fritz Schwegler, who strongly encouraged him to develop his work with models, and then obtained a Master of Fine Arts at Goldsmiths College in London in 1992. Quite naturally and quickly, photography, at first a simple tool allowing him to keep track of his fragile paper constructions, became the ultimate goal of his enterprise.
