The exhibition

Monet / Rothko, the great color

Abstract, Rothko? Abstract, Monet? It is the question of a Monet heralding the abstract, at the end of his life until the 1920s, that this duo exhibition poses which follows Monet and abstraction in 2010 at the Marmottan museum and the more recent Water Lilies. American abstraction and the last Monet in 2018 at the Orangerie des Tuileries which put in perspective these great paintings by Monet with those of American abstract expressionist painters, including already Mark Rothko. This question of the passage to abstraction from Monet gives us the pleasure of seeing paintings by Rothko again and the rare moment of confronting two painters who have achieved this high expression of color over the total extent of the canvas. In four rooms, six Rothko and seven Monet, the exhibition is a dialogue and a journey in what I would call “the great color”.
