Camoin - coloriste en liberté

Camoin - coloriste en liberté : Charles CAMOIN, La Saltimbanque au repos, 1905, Huile sur carton, 65 x 81 cm, Musée d’Art Moderne de Paris, © RMN–Grand Palais (Agence Bulloz), ADAGP, Paris 2022.

The exhibition

Born in 1879 in Marseille, Charles Camoin was a fauve in both painting and spirit. First, in his lyrical paintings, where pure color guided the composition. Speaking of his vocation as a colorist, he described himself as a "fauve en liberté". In this regard, we must see his Deux Pins dans les calanques de Piana (1910), in which the water is an intense azure blue, and the outline of the rocks a flaming red, the result of a trip to Corsica with the painter Emilie Charmy, his companion at the time. Fauve, he was by temperament, to the point of destroying all the paintings in his studio in 1914 on a whim, after having already shown doubts by darkening his palette between 1908 and 1912.
