Mark Brusse. Œuvres choisies

Mark Brusse. Œuvres choisies : Mark Brusse, Too quiet, 2020, sculpture assemblage, technique mixte, 28 x 48 x 14 cm.

The exhibition

Mark Brusse, iconic figure of the art scene, takes place at Galerie Vallois. The artist personally selects a small group of works that he created between 1986 and 2020, some of which are the product of his residency in Cotonou, Benin. There is a link between each of these works, as conceived by the animist beliefs dear to Brusse. In this inter-medium dialogue that the artist proposes, sculptures and paintings dialogue together to highlight Brusse's attachment to Benin. The sculptures of wood, terra cotta or bronze are totemic figures inspired by Beninese religious art. As for the painting, the references are multiple, the format and the technique owe to the Japanese print, and the iconography to the Beninese landscapes. Whether it is a reference to legbas or Asian exvotos, the spirituality of these works leads to the meditative experience of the viewer. A fascinating manifestation of the Brusse phenomenon is thus taking place at Galerie Vallois.
