Le Surréalisme dans l'art américain

Le Surréalisme dans l'art américain : Kay Sage Starlings, Caravans 1948 huile sur toile 81,3 x 99,1 cm San Francisco, Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco Legion of Honor Museum de Young Museum © Estate of Kay Sage / Adagp, Paris, 2021 Photo : Fine Arts Museum of San Francisco

The exhibition

In October 1940, the Surrealist group - Brauner, Ernst, Masson and Lam in particular - took refuge in Marseille, then in the free zone, around André Breton, awaiting their transfer to the New World. Starting with a reminder of their stay in Marseilles at the Villa Air-Bel and of this exile, the exhibition led by Éric de Chassey nuances the narrative of the birth of American art with their arrival in New York in 1941. It also explores the more specifically American surrealist developments, divorced from the contingencies of his initial European thoughts and political aims.
