Françoise Huguier,
A leading figure in contemporary French photography, Françoise Huguier has profoundly revitalised the documentary approach, freeing it from its purely journalistic remit.
From Africa to Asia, from Russia to Korea, her countless journeys have provided opportunities not only to explore distant lands, but above all to meet the people who live there.
‘The curious one’, as she likes to describe herself, favours immersion and taking her time to capture the gestures, bodies, interiors, details and secrets of everyday life. Her style is characterised by bold framing, a particular attention to colours and textures, and a highly personal way of bringing out the strangeness at the heart of reality.
Whether she is photographing the women of Mali, communal flats in Saint Petersburg or the nights of Seoul, Huguier always blends social observation, sensuality and a cinematic quality. Each of her journeys thus becomes a project in its own right, one that extends over time through exhibitions and publications, including *Sur les traces de l’Afrique fantôme*, *En route pour Behring*, *Secrètes, Sublimes* and *Kommounalki*.
Huguier’s work also bears witness to her pioneering commitment, notably through the creation of the Bamako Photography Biennale in 1994, which helped to raise the profile of contemporary African photography.
