Born to Greek parents in South Africa, Penny Siopis quickly established herself as a major figure in the South African contemporary art scene. A committed feminist, she became known in the 1980s and 1990s for paintings that sharply criticized colonialism, apartheid, and sexism. She later created videos, films, and installations in which she explores memory, truth, and the complex relationships between personal and collective histories during a time of significant sociopolitical change in South Africa.
