Irish visual artist Alice Maher studied French and political history at the University of Limerick before focusing on the visual arts. She trained, among others, at the Crawford Municipal College of Art in Cork (1985) and then at the San Francisco Art Institute (1986-1987), expanding her artistic exploration through painting, drawing, sculpture, printmaking, photography, and installation. Influenced by nature, childhood, and myths of transformation from various cultures (Greek, Latin, Irish, and universal), Alice Maher explores themes such as memory, identity, and femininity in her work. With a spirit that aligns her with surrealist reverie, she creates intriguing works based on the subversion of everyday objects or the incorporation of unusual materials (hair, nettles, brambles…) that challenge viewers’ expectations.
