Born in Mexico City, Flor Garduño studied visual arts at the National University of Mexico, where her professor, Kati Horna, profoundly influenced her. Starting in 1979, she became the assistant to photographer Manuel Álvarez Bravo, who introduced her to traditional printing techniques and helped her master the art of chiaroscuro.
In the 1980s, Flor Garduño worked as an illustrator for Mexican public education. She traveled to rural areas of the country to document the life and rituals of local peoples, an experience that allowed her to develop her own style. In 1988, she undertook a photographic campaign in Latin America, which led to the publication of Testigos del tiempo (Witnesses of Time) in 1992. This collection of images offers a rare testimony to the survival of indigenous traditions. It achieved international success and won the Kodak Award for photographic criticism.
Since the 2000s, Flor Garduño has pursued a more formalist approach, focusing on themes of wildlife, nature, and the female nude.
