Working in : Between Seville and Madrid
Artist's gallery
Pilar Albarracín is a Spanish artist known for her performances and installations that explore Andalusian folklore and identity through sharp feminist critique. A graduate of the School of Fine Arts in Seville in 1993, she quickly established herself on the contemporary art scene, both in Spain and internationally. Since the 1990s, Albarracín has analyzed and deconstructed cultural traditions and the stereotypes associated with women in post-Franco Spanish society. She humorously and transgressively reinterprets emblematic elements of Andalusian culture, such as flamenco, bullfighting, Catholic rituals, and Baroque art, to highlight the patriarchal dynamics that underpin it. In a practice that includes photography, embroidery, video, and performance, she uses costumes, accessories, and symbols to subvert the traditions she references and to reveal the narrow roles assigned to women.
