Auguste Flandrin

1804 (Lyon) / 1842 (Lyon)

As soon as their situation was settled, his two younger sons Hyppolite and Paul hired Auguste Flandrin in the master Ingres' studio; there he continued a wise form of history painting, including a Savonarola preaching in the church of San Miniato which, in 1840, plunges us back into the tension of a recollected fanaticism, a middle ground that is, to say the least, far removed from Delacroix' cinematic melodramas.
