The young and talented painter Kudzanai-Violet Hwami, born in 1993 in Zimbabwe - which she represented at the last Venice Biennale - before spending her 9th to 17th birthday in South Africa and then moving to England, also takes on the black body as a place of both intimate and public struggle. "When I look to the future, it is possible for me to imagine the black body as a free subject rather than locking it into history and the present. Because the present, and history, have not been, and still are not, conducive to Black existence," she explains.
