Born in London to Ghanaian parents in 1977 (the year of punk) and nominated in 2013 for the Turner Prize (the year Laure Prouvost won), the artist and poet Lynette Yiadom-Boakye also paints her own ghosts by creating, in one day, imaginary and refined portraits of invented black figures, barefoot and from modest backgrounds, but who emerge from a public void between light and shadow, like Velasquez's kings and queens. Manipulating the art of political fiction, the queen of blackface claims to be able to reinvent the concept of race as she pleases.
