If the very name César conjures up the image of a compression, if not a trophy, one does not always have in mind the measure of the incredible success that the artist had in the 1950s with his welded metal sculptures. In this art form - for which he never hid the debt he owed to its inventor, Julio González, or to his mentor, Germaine Richier - César became an absolute master. Where he did show originality was in working with all sorts of discarded objects gleaned here and there from the car wrecks that he so enjoyed visiting. From the end of the 1940s onwards, César never stopped producing sculptures made of handlebars, forks, bolts, rods and other metal parts that scrap dealers recovered from all the objects they bought or that were dropped off.
