Camille Pissarro

1830 (Charlotte-Amélie (Antilles danoises)) / 1903 (Paris)

In 1866, the Salon jury probably resigned itself to accepting a landscape by him. In L'Évènement of May 20, 1866, Émile Zola wrote: "Mr. Pissarro is an unknown, of whom no one will probably speak. [...] So why on earth do you have the insignificant clumsiness of painting solidly and studying nature frankly?" Two years later, Zola confirmed his admiration: "Camille Pissarro is one of the three or four painters of this time. He possesses solidity and breadth of touch, he paints boldly, following the traditions, like the masters. I have rarely encountered a more profound science. A beautiful painting by this artist is an act of an honest man. I could not better define his talent.
