In 1968, Roland Barthes postulated the necessity of the "death of the author", synonymous of " authority " - he will find again in 1973 the desire of this figure in Le Plaisir du texte. Louis Cane and his free canvases can confess their indebtedness to Rothko's colorfield and Newman's split space. For Cane finds in them an alternative - which he describes a posteriori as "sensual" - to the abstract lyricism of the 1950s, "more generator of style than of randomness". In fact, for Sol/Mur, which has no frame, he fills the space with a colour sprayed with a spray bottle, at a distance from the gesture that could betray the voluntary erasure of its author.
