Mutation, hybridization, globalization... It is an understatement to say that Pascale Marthine Tayou is a nomad, that he surveys the world, from north to south and from east to west, and that he aspires to embrace all cultures in order to constantly give form to new possibilities. Pascale Marthine Tayou is a surveyor of spaces, driven by a permanent movement to meet the Other. His art, which is based as much on a projection of his own history as on the memory of his people, is not an appropriation but a transmutation of the world's fragments. It often seems that everything is jostled around, but it is in order to create a new one, away from conventions and customs. If he seizes with empathy the objects and materials he finds along the way, it is to inhabit them, to instil a soul into them.
