Driven by a quest to devalue ideology and painting, he founded a variant of Pop Art with other artists (Sigmar Polke, Konrad Fischer-Lueg and Manfred Kuttner) in 1963 with "Capitalist Realism". His first solo exhibition took place in 1964 at the Schmela Gallery in Düsseldorf.
The events at the Art Gallery of Ontario and the Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago in 1998 marked the beginning of his career in North America. In 2002, a first retrospective exhibition was dedicated to him by the Museum of Modern Art in New York ("40 Years of painting"), before traveling to the Art Institute of Chicago, the SF MOMA in San Francisco and the Hirshhorn Museum in Washington. He has participated in numerous editions of Documenta (7, 8, 9, 10) and the Venice Biennale (36th, 40th, 47th and 52nd).
