Félicien Rops
1833 (Namur) / 1898 (Corbeil-Essonnes)
"Adopting the old concept of the Middle Ages, that man floats between Good and Evil, struggles between God and the Devil, between Purity which is of divine essence and Lust which is the Devil himself. M. Félicien Rops, with the soul of a primitive in reverse, has accomplished the opposite of Memling; he has penetrated, summarized Satanism in admirable plates which are as inventions, as symbols, as incisive and nervous art, ferocious and distressed, truly unique."
