Edouard Vuillard
1868 (Cuiseaux) / 1940 (La Baule-Escoublac)
What Vuillard paints is what is present to our sight, immediately graspable by our eyes, but on condition that at the same moment we close them. He shows us both the thing itself and its memory. Instead of painting the subject, Vuillard is already painting its persistence.
Text by Jean-Louis Baudry, Art absolument n°6, special issue on Édouard Vuillard, autumn 2003.
