Pierre-Paul Rubens
1577 (Siegen) / 1640 (Antwerp)
One of the most eminent Nordic painters, if not the most talented, was at the same time an artist of international renown, a fine diplomat on behalf of various European courts, a shrewd merchant who brilliantly organized the production of the studio he directed in Antwerp, and possessed of a thirst for erudition that makes the greatest minds. His painting, baroque if ever there was one, gives pride of place to color, to the melting of the brushstrokes and to the psychological passion animating his characters, especially in religious subjects. A fervent Catholic, Peter Paul Rubens seized upon the art of Venice - Titian whom he admired so much - and the classics - Michelangelo, Raphael, etc. - but also that of his contemporaries - Caravaggio in the first place - to better serve the doctrine of the Counter-Reformation.
