Kazimir Malevitch

1878 (Kiev) / 1935 (Léningrad)

"Only a few painters have considered painting as an action with a purpose in itself. These painters see neither houses, nor mountains, nor sky, nor rivers as such; for them all these things are pictorial surfaces and they do not care whether they look like them, whether the water or the plastered wall of a house is faithfully reproduced or whether the pictorial surface of the sky is painted on the roof of the house or on its side. These painters only see the paint growing on the surfaces and they transpose it, transplant it to the canvas in a new harmonious system."
Kazimir Malevich, art absolument n°11, winter 2005
