"Struck down by death in 1690, Le Brun remains forever the prolix genius of a reign that once dazzled the whole world. Victim of his fame and his company, the Regency, wishing to forget the austerity of the deceased despot, condemned this art that was no longer understood... He thus sank, in spite of his work, one of the richest that it is in graphic arts. His studio having been raided for the benefit of the royal cabinet, the Louvre still possesses all of his drawings, of which nearly three hundred sheets document this work alone."
