Frans Post

1612 (Leyde) / 1680 (Haarlem)

"In his neutrality and refusal of the spectacular, Post does not even come close to the concern for realism of his Dutch Caravaggesque contemporaries, who were always imbued with the picturesque in their search for a normal truth. If there is any picturesqueness in the distant but precise figuration of animals and characters. There his talent as a miniaturist bursts forth: in his groups of black slaves dressed in Indian style, or in his Indians wearing sandals and their heads covered with feathers.
