Philippe de Champaigne
1602 (Brussels) / 1674 (Paris)
The austerity of Philippe de Champaigne's art is matched only by the nobility he knows how to confer on his subjects, whose majesty or humility he exalts. A friend of the painter Nicolas Poussin, he is one of the great representatives of French classicism. He was recognized during his lifetime for his religious paintings and the numerous portraits he produced, in which he transcribed the essential character, the profound being of each of his models.
