Paul Cézanne

1839 (Aix-en-Provence) / 1906

Beyond Impressionism, a movement in which he participated, it was in the search for volume that Paul Cézanne shone most brightly. Anticipating the cubism of Braque and Picasso, he painted numerous views of Mont Sainte-Victoire from the motif, a landscape that he modulated into planes as he wished. His search led him to find "something as solid as the art of museums", as he himself stated, and the ambition of his programme ("to do Poussin on nature") can be measured by the success of his works, and by the indelible mark they have left on the adventure of modern art.
