Alexandra Paperno is an artist originally from Moscow who moved to the United States at a very young age, where she graduated with a degree in art from the Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art in New York in 2000. On her return to her homeland, she held her first exhibition at the National Centre for Contemporary Arts in 2004. This was followed by numerous solo exhibitions, including *Star Maps* in Moscow and *Abolished Constellations* at the Volker Diehl Gallery in Berlin. She has also taken part in several international exhibitions, including a collateral event at the Venice Architecture Biennale at the Casa dei Tre Oci in 2012, and *It’s OK to change your mind!* six years later at MAMbo – the Museum of Modern Art in Bologna – and the Thessaloniki Biennale of Contemporary Art, amongst others. Her works are also held in several major institutional collections, notably those of the Moscow Museum of Modern Art, the Tretyakov Gallery, the M HKA in Antwerp and the Outset Contemporary Art Fund in London.
Paperno adopts a resolutely contemporary approach, developing a body of work at the intersection of abstraction and figuration that invites us to reconsider our relationship with the world and its dimensions. Her work transcends the pitfalls of standardisation: it is conceived as the result of an assemblage, a ‘constellation’ of private and collective experiences. Drawing inspiration from Soviet architecture and its spaces, as well as from references to astronomy, constellations and cosmology, his work challenges the viewer and draws them into a contemplative reflection on space, time and the multiple scales of our reality.
