The exhibition

Berthe Morisot, the Enlightenment and the vivid

What is it about Berthe Morisot's painting that is 18th-century? Based on the observation that one never comes from nowhere, this new exhibition at Marmottan Monet focuses on Morisot's tastes and inspirations. It's not the first time the museum has put the spotlight on the Impressionist painter: it already did so in 2012 with a monographic exhibition, and in 2021 with a show devoted to her daughter, Julie Manet. Nevertheless, Marianne Mathieu and Dominique d'Arnoult shed new light on the artist's work, including such landmark works as Au bal (1875), which opens the exhibition. For, boldly, this is not so much a question of Impressionism.
