The exhibition

Continuation of the first part in 2020 at the Mémorial de Caen, but where Soulages, Hartung and the artists in the collection of the Fondation Gandur pour l'Art opted for abstract painting in the post-war years and put the march of the world at a distance, part of the following generation returned to figuration. Authoritarianism was in the sights of most of them, be it Franco's regime, Germany's incomplete denazification - Erró in his painting Vous êtes acquitté, Gauf (1970) - or Moscow's iron fist, whose intervention in Prague in 1968 prompted two of the 69 works exhibited in Caen that same year, one by Schlosser and the other by Tisserand. But it's American politics and the way of life associated with it that focus the attention of this critical art, whether it's the war in Vietnam or mass consumption.
